Student project

The project

Polycystic ovarian syndrome affects 1 in 8 women in the UK meaning that there is an opportunity to effectively help individuals manage their condition which affects all aspects of their everyday life. Primary research was carried out which informed all features and design choices within the prototype. The goal was to help users understand and manage their condition by allowing them to track their symptoms and identify changes in their cycle.

research

This project began with extensive research of primary interviews, personas, journey mapping and user pain points. Research found that women with PCOS struggle to fully understand their condition, don’t effectively manage PCOS, struggle to identify patterns in their symptoms and feel insecure about their condition and its impacts on later life. Further research discovered pain points in current period tracking apps such as the paywalls blocking access to specific and relevant information to their condition and assuming that individuals with PCOS have regular periods.

process

Features and solutions were developed to respond to user needs, which were sketched and progressed into a mid-fidelity wireframe for user testing. Initial user testing involved discussing the usability of the prototype with primary user. Improvements were implemented to the prototype following user testing in order to enhance user experience and strengthen the functionality and clarity.

the outcome

The finalised prototype focusing on solving core user needs and pain points in order to aid the challenges that women face with PCOS. The user interface aims to be approachable and easy to use. Symptom tracking Sync allows users to track PCOS-specific symptoms and their period. The symptoms are prioritised as this feeds into the cycle patterns feature of the app. Cycle patterns This feature is accessed on the homepage and shows data visualisations of the users inputted symptoms. This means they can identify patterns in their symptoms, some women with PCOS have a rise in symptoms just before their period meaning Sync can recognise these overtime to warn them beforehand. Therefore, their period does not catch them off guard and they can be prepared based on their symptoms experienced. Exploring resources Sync provides access to PCOS-specific information. Research found that users did not fully understand their condition or how to manage PCOS. Current period tracking apps can provide some information about PCOS but is often hidden behind a paywall. Therefore this feature provides free, accessible information in three different formats, video, audio and reading to allow all types of users understand PCOS, whether newly diagnosed or have had it for years. Logging exercises This feature provides a range of different exercises across three categories of energy, depending on the user. Research found that exercise can help manage PCOS symptoms. Sync provides a range of suitable and appropriate exercises for users to involve themselves in with videos to follow along to if wanted. User interface Sync uses a friendly and approachable UI design which provides a supportive and reassuring setting for users.
